About

DJ Idea. Sunnyvale to the world.

Bay Area producer. Same sound since 2003. Built the catalog, built the studio, built the plugin. Now exporting it.

01

Sunnyvale, 1998

Moved to Sunnyvale, CA in 6th grade. Silicon Valley was on one side, the Bay Area mob scene was on the other. Homestead High School, same campus that produced Steve Jobs and Wozniak. The geography did the heavy lifting. Tech kids around him made him understand the computer. Mac Dre, E-40, JT The Bigga Figga, B-Legit, Killa Tay, AWOL Records, Rappin’ 4-Tay coming through Wild 94.9 and 106 KMEL made him understand the sound.

First turntables came from the San Jose Flea Market in 2001. Practiced scratching on tabletops before he had the decks. Found a VHS tape called "Turntable Wizards Mechanic Workshop" at East Ridge mall. Crab scratches, flares, orbits, double clicks. The timing and rhythm foundation was set there.

The 2003 moment

Dad bought a copy of Hip-Hop EJ, loop-stacking software. That opened the door. Then FL Studio 3, then 4. The homie Mark down the street was the first to record him on a Windows 98 machine in the AIM era. The crew freestyled in the home studio every day after work.

Then the homie Nitty brought over a burnt CD from his older brother Izzy. JT The Bigga Figga, "From Fillmo to Hunters Point." Player music, Bay Area mob, the whole thing. That night, the sound locked in. DJ Idea’s own words: "I’ve modeled my beats off of a sound I’ve developed probably around 2003." Twenty-one years of consistency since.

“Every day after work, let’s all report to DJ Idea’s spot. See what new beat he got up. All just flow.” Cypress Moreno

Cardo found him on YouTube

End of 2018. Cardo Got Wings hit him up after finding the catalog on YouTube. They met at NAMM 2019. That winter DJ Idea flew out to LA and posted up at Cardo’s crib for a week. Met Young Thug, Travis Scott (at his birthday), Kendrick, ScHoolboy Q, 42 Dougg, Johnny Giuliano. The placement era opened in real time.

Through Cardo, beats landed on Larry June’s "Product of the Dope Game" ("The Man Is Crazy," "Peanut Butter Rag Top"). $tupid Young x Tee Grizzley dropped "With a Sticc." Kamaiyah cut 5 records to the catalog. Big Sad, Payroll Giovanni, P-Lo, LaRussell, Young Slo-Be, Olexesh all followed. 287 verified placements and counting.

“You’re the pioneer of that for this generation. That mob, that’s your sound.” Cypress Moreno · DJ Idea Documentary

The plugin and the catalog

The catalog kept growing. AirBit Content ID started flagging 6,157 videos by other artists using DJ Idea beats. 4.21 million views generated by other people. The placements compounded. The plugin came next: Player VST, hand-coded in JUCE, designed to let any producer access the Sunnyvale-Bay-mob sound without 21 years of crate-digging.

Mike & Keys (Nipsey Hussle, YG, Roddy Ricch) put it on record in the documentary: "He created Player VST. That’s my favorite VST right now. Me and Keys don’t use any VSTs right now. Except Player VST."

05

2024 and forward

Daily YouTube upload streak since 2016. Unbroken. 3,650+ days of one beat per day, every day. In December 2024 the self-filmed, self-edited, self-directed 38-minute documentary "The Million Dollar Play" dropped on YouTube. Co-produced "Strategizer" with Young Slo-Be that same year. The studio in Burbank with the DJ Flip Cruz family. A recording studio of his own.

Philosophy locked. "We set the future. We create the trends. We don’t chase trends."

The whole story is in the doc.
