The Cardo Got Wings YouTube Discovery That Opened LA

Cardo Got Wings found the catalog on YouTube at the end of 2018. That sentence is the bridge between two eras of DJ Idea’s career. Before Cardo: a Sunnyvale producer with 15 years of craft, a daily YouTube upload streak running for two and a half years by then, and a deep Bay Area network but no LA placement plug. After Cardo: the Larry June placements, the Detroit-Bay $tupid Young x Tee Grizzley cut, the Kamaiyah catalog, NAMM 2019 in person, a week at Cardo’s LA crib meeting Young Thug, Travis Scott (at his birthday), Kendrick, ScHoolboy Q, 42 Dougg, Johnny Giuliano.

The chain started with one YouTube view. This post is the story of how it actually happened.

The YouTube catalog was already compounding

The daily upload streak started in 2016. By the end of 2018 that was about 1,000 consecutive days of one beat per day, every day. Most of those beats sat on YouTube with low view counts. A few got picked up by aggregator channels (the broader type-beat ecosystem). The compounding wasn’t happening in subscriber count or per-video views. It was happening in surface area.

A producer of Cardo’s caliber crate-digs differently than a casual YouTube browser. He searches for specific structural elements (a kind of bass, a particular drum pocket, a sound he can’t find anywhere else) and follows the trail wherever it goes. DJ Idea’s YouTube channel had the structural elements (the Bay Area mob pocket nobody else in the type-beat ecosystem was occupying that consistently) and the volume (1,000+ beats indexed and searchable).

The first contact

Per the documentary, Cardo hit DJ Idea up after finding the catalog. The conversation was short and direct: the kind of contact that happens between two producers who recognize each other’s pocket immediately. NAMM 2019 was the first in-person meet a few weeks later.

The thing producers don’t talk about enough: at NAMM you can wear a vendor badge for free and access most of the producer-relevant rooms without paying for the trade-show ticket. DJ Idea hadn’t done that before. After NAMM 2019, the LA week happened.

The LA week

Cardo had DJ Idea stay at his crib in LA for the week after NAMM. Documentary footage captures pieces of it. The full list of people in the room across that week: Young Thug, Travis Scott (at Travis’s birthday party), Kendrick, ScHoolboy Q, 42 Dougg, Johnny Giuliano, Shay West, the broader Cardo network.

Most type-beat producers never get that week. Most also wouldn’t know what to do with it if they did. DJ Idea did what producers who’ve been working consistently for 15 years do: showed up, listened, contributed where contribution was wanted, didn’t try to be the loudest voice in the room. The relationships compounded after that week the same way the YouTube catalog had been compounding the previous two years.

What happened next

Larry June’s team (AC and Cory) started pulling beats from the catalog. Cuts landed on Product of the Dope Game. The $tupid Young x Tee Grizzley placement “With a Sticc” happened in the same window. The Kamaiyah catalog records started. Big Sad. Payroll Giovanni. P-Lo. LaRussell. Young Slo-Be (RIP). Olexesh on the German rap side. Every one of them traceable back to relationships that opened in that LA week or in the months after, with Cardo as the original plug.

The lesson for producers reading this

Three things made the Cardo discovery possible:

  1. The catalog had to exist before he could find it. 15 years of beats, a daily upload streak running since 2016. The compounding was already in place. Cardo didn’t discover potential, he discovered receipts.
  2. The pocket had to be specific enough to recognize. Bay Area mob with modern mix discipline. Not generic type-beat. Not on-trend trap. A pocket clean enough that another producer could hear it and know immediately what was happening.
  3. The producer had to show up when called. NAMM 2019 in person. LA week at the crib. Not over Zoom. Not via email threads. Most type-beat producers never leave their bedroom. The ones who get placements show up.

For artists, the takeaway is different: DJ Idea’s catalog has the Cardo lineage in it. Beats made in this pocket have already worked at the highest level. Cardo type beats filter routes directly to the relevant lane. Larry June type beats live next to it.
